Breathing Exercises

Child practicing deep breathing
Balloon Breathing
Imagine filling up a balloon in your belly

Pretend your belly is a balloon. Breathe in slowly through your nose and feel your belly expand like a balloon. Then breathe out through your mouth and feel the balloon deflate.

Difficulty: EasyTime: 5 minutes
Ocean Breathing
Make the sound of ocean waves with your breath

Breathe in through your nose, then breathe out through your mouth while making a "shhhh" sound, like ocean waves crashing on the shore. Feel your body relax with each wave.

Difficulty: MediumTime: 7 minutes
Square Breathing
Follow the shape of a square with your breath

Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, breathe out for 4 counts, and hold for 4 counts. Imagine tracing the shape of a square as you breathe.

Difficulty: MediumTime: 8 minutes
Bunny Breathing
Quick sniffs like a bunny, then a long exhale

Take three quick sniffs through your nose (like a bunny!), then one long exhale through your mouth. This is a fun way to get more oxygen into your body.

Difficulty: EasyTime: 5 minutes

Did you know?

Deep breathing sends a message to your brain to calm down and relax. When you breathe deeply, it helps lower your heart rate and blood pressure, which can help reduce pain.
